From User to Practitioner
More than a billion people have tried AI tools since ChatGPT launched in late 2022. Most of them hit a ceiling early and concluded that AI isn't that useful for serious work. The ceiling isn't the technology — it's the mental model.

Why most people plateau
The pattern is consistent. Someone tries AI, gets a few useful outputs on simple tasks — summarize this, draft that, fix the grammar here — and builds a routine around those wins. The tool becomes a slightly more capable search engine, or a fast copy editor. Helpful at the margins. Not transformative.
Then they try something harder. They ask for analysis of a complex policy document, or help thinking through a grant strategy, or a substantive critique of a proposal. The output is generic, sometimes wrong, often bland. They conclude the tool has limits they can't overcome. They go back to the simple tasks.
The issue isn't the model's capability. It's that complex tasks require a different approach — and no one taught it to them. Prompt engineering isn't obvious. Context management takes deliberate setup. Most people never learn the techniques that unlock the more substantial applications, so they settle for the ones that work without any technique at all.
The ceiling most people hit isn't the technology's ceiling. It's a technique ceiling. And technique is learnable.
The intern-to-chief-of-staff shift
The most useful reframe is this: most people treat AI like an intern. A useful one, but still — someone you give simple, low-stakes tasks. Create a document draft. Fix the grammar in this email. Summarize this meeting transcript. There's nothing wrong with these uses. They save time. But they don't fundamentally change what you can accomplish.
AI can do substantially more than intern-level work. To unlock that capacity, you need to stop treating it like an intern and start treating it like a chief of staff.
The difference is structural. An intern follows simple instructions. You tell them exactly what to do, they do it, that's the transaction. A chief of staff understands your goals, anticipates your needs, challenges your assumptions. You can say “I'm thinking about pitching this grant — what am I missing?” and they'll come back with risks you haven't considered, stronger angles for the proposal, questions about whether the timeline is realistic. That's not a transaction — that's a thinking partnership.
AI doesn't automatically act like a chief of staff just because you ask it a hard question. You have to set it up properly. That setup has two parts: good prompts (asking clearly and specifically) and good context (giving AI enough information about you, your work, and your constraints to actually help). Both of these are learnable, and both are covered in this course.
When technique matters — and when it doesn't
Not every AI interaction requires deliberate technique. The complexity threshold is a useful guide: for low-complexity tasks — fix this grammar, convert this to a table, translate this to Spanish — just use AI naturally. Modern LLMs are remarkably good at these tasks with minimal prompting. Don't overthink it.
For high-complexity tasks — analyze this grant strategy, find the holes in this policy proposal, help me think through the trade-offs in this project design, pressure-test my argument before I present it — you need the skills in this course. The difference isn't the topic being difficult. It's that high-complexity tasks require the AI to hold more context, apply judgment, and produce output that's genuinely tailored to your situation rather than a polished-sounding generic response.
Context engineering is more important than prompt engineering in the long run. But you need to learn prompting first — it's the prerequisite for everything else. Think of it like learning to cook: prompting is knife skills, context is how you stock and organize your kitchen.
What this course covers
This course covers four interlocking skills. Prompt Engineering teaches you the mechanics of asking well — the RACE framework and the specific techniques that improve output quality. Context Engineering teaches you how to give AI the background it needs to produce work that's genuinely tailored to your role, your organization, and your constraints.
