The climate crisis is no longer a future scenario. It's showing up in emergency rooms across America.
Heat killed more Americans last summer than hurricanes, floods, and tornadoes combined. ER visits for heat-related illness rose 34% between 2018 and 2024. Urban heat islands amplify temperatures by 4-8°C in the most vulnerable neighborhoods. Without intervention, heat-related mortality in U.S. cities will triple by 2050.
The solution is nature-based. Our analysis at UrbanClimate Alliance shows that strategic urban canopy restoration and green infrastructure corridors reduce peak surface temperatures by up to 5°C, cut cooling energy costs by 25%, and create biodiversity corridors that strengthen urban ecosystem resilience.
We're calling on every city above 100,000 residents to commit 2% of their infrastructure budget to nature-based cooling by 2028. 47 cities have already signed the UrbanClimate Cooling Pledge.
The planet cannot wait. The science is settled. The only missing ingredient is political will. Be on the right side of history.
